Ich hab mich nach einer guten Woche doch vom Strand trennen können und mich am Dienstag auf den Weg nach Mérida gemacht. Dort bin ich ins Nomadas Hostel eingecheckt, ein riesiges Hostel mit großem Angebot: von Yoga am Morgen, Salsastunden, Kochkurs und Pool.

I actually managed to leave Playa del Carmen and the beach for Mérida after a week, on Tuesday. I checked in at the Nomadas Hostel, a big one with a variety of offers: Yoga in the morning, Salsa and cooking lessons and a pool.

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza - We made it!

Dieser Ort sagt wahrscheinlich den meisten etwas, er ist am bekanntesten für die Mayaruinen und wahrscheinlich auch der touristischste, den ich bisher besucht habe. Aus diesem Grund gibt es unglaublich viele Busse von Mérida nach Chichen Itza und wir haben leider den erwischt, der 2,5 Stunden braucht und keine Toilette an Bord hat... wir sind also langsam über die Dörfer und alle Geschwindigkeitshuckel, die man sich nur vorstellen kann, zu den Ruinen gefahren.
Die große Pyramide war sehr beeindruckend und ich hab sogar den Choc Mool gesehen, von der Entfernung. Leider sind alle Tempel großräumig abgesperrt, sodass die Besichtigung nicht ganz so abenteuerlich war. Nach knappen 3 Stunden haben wir uns auf den langen Rückweg begeben.
Zurück in Mérida haben wir uns dann bei Chaya Maya, einem sehr empfehlenswerten Restaurant für Yucatekische Küche, gestärkt.

Old Cementery, Chichen Itza

I guess this name rings a bell for most of you, it's the best known for the Maya ruins and probably the most touristic place as well. For that reason there are many busses from Mérida and lucky as we were we hopped on the bus that needs 2,5hrs to get there (opposed to 1.5hrs regularly) and doesn't have toilets onboard... so we slowly reached our destination passing through hundreds of small villages and taking every speed bump available.
The big pyramid was very impressive and I even saw Choc Mool, from the distance. Unfortunately, none of the temples can be climbed. Hence, the this visit wasn't that adventurous. After about 3 hours we headed back to Mérida and went out for dinner at Chaya Maya, famous for Yucatecan cuisine. It was delicious and the service outstanding.

Uxmal - More Temples

Eigentlich hatte ich nach Chichen Itza erstmal genug von den Tempeln und den Mayas, aber dann hab ich mich doch den Mädels angeschlossen. Diesmal waren es nur 1,5 Stunden Fahrt und absolut gar nicht überlaufen. Das Gelände ist viel größer und man konnte sich die Ruinen hautnah ansehen. Wir sind durch den Wald gewandert und auf Aussichtsplattformen geklettert und hatten unseren Spaß. Uxmal sollte man sich auf jeden Fall ansehen!
Falls man dann noch etwas Zeit hat bevor der Bus zurück in die Stadt kommt, ist die Schokolade des Schokoladenmuseums sehr empfehlenswert...

After Chichen Itza I've actually had enough of ruins and the Mayas. Nevertheless, I chose to join the girls for their trip to Uxmal. This time it was only a 1.5 hrs ride and not very crowded at all. The area is quite big and we could actually touch the stones of the ruins. We walked though the forest and climbed up some platforms. Uxmal is a must!
In case there is some extra time between the ruins and the bus to Merida, the shop of the chocolate museum is worth a visit...

Der letzte Tag sollte nun endlich mal der Stadt und eigentlich dem Pool gewidmet werden. Das mit dem Pool sollte aber irgendwie nicht sein, es war bewölkt und eher frisch. Somit haben wir den Tag mit Yoga begonnen und es langsam angehen lassen. So gegen Mittag haben wir uns auf den Weg in die Stadt gemacht und den Markt erkundet. Da kommt man von einer Halle in die andere und es scheint einfach kein Ende zu nehmen. Nach einer kleiner Stärkung an einem der Taco-Stände wollten wir eigentlich schon umdrehen, weil wir dachten das wäre alles gewesen. Da lagen wir ganz falsch! Nur gut, dass wir eine Toilette brauchten und wir von einem Gang in den nächsten, in eine neue Halle, vorbei an weiteren Ständen und mehr oder weniger frischem Fleisch geschickt wurden... da kann man sich direkt verirren. Letztendlich haben wir den richtigen Gemüsemarkt gefunden und uns für wenig Geld reichlich ausgerüstet für die Fahrt nach Holbox (nächstes Reiseziel) am nächsten Tag. Dass wir am selben Abend noch aufbrechen würden, hätten wir zu dem Zeitpunkt nicht gedacht.

Nach einer kurzen Obstpause sind wir ins MACAY, das Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst gegangen, sehr zu empfehlen und sogar kostenlos!

The last day in Merida was supposed to be dedicated to the pool and the city center. The pool idea vanished into thin air since it was overcast and quite breezy. Thus, we started the day with yoga and took our time. Around noon we left the hostel to explore the city and the famous market halls. We went from one market hall to another one and there seemed to be no end. After a short lunch break at one of the taco street food stands we were about to head back to the city center, we thought we saw it all. We were so wrong! Luckily, we had to look for restrooms and in order to find them we were sent to just another hall, endless isles passing more stands and the fresh (more or less) meat section... it's very easy to get lost there. Eventually, we found the real vegetable and fruit market and equipped ourselves with fruits and fresh tacos for the trip to Holbox (next destination after Merida) next day. At this point of time we didn't know that we were actually going to leave the same day.

After a short break eating fruit we went to the MACAY, the museum of contemporary art. I am glad we went and it was even for free!
