El Capital del Mundo - Parral

New Year - New City

Es ist mal wieder Zeit für Abwechslung und neue Eindrücke haben wir uns gedacht. Ich hab zwar keine Ahnung, warum die Wahl ausgerechnet auf Parral fiel, aber es hat sich gelohnt. Ein Tagesausflug in die etwa 3h entfernte Stadt wäre etwas stressig geworden, also entschieden wir uns eine Nacht zu bleiben. Wie das immer so ist in Mexiko, kennt Luis jemanden in Parral und meinte wir sollten sie mal kontaktieren. Gesagt, getan: Luis Gonzalez und ich wurden die beiden Tage komplett von Alexandra versorgt.

It's time for change and new input, we thought. Even though I don't know why Parral was the chosen destination, it was totally worth it. Since the city is about 3h away from Chihuahua it would have been a little stressful to go there for only one day which is why we decided to stay a night. As usual around here, when somebody knows somebody in the city of your destination they'll let you know and put you in touch. So it happened that Luis recommended to contact Alexandra who lives in Parral. Said, done: Luis Gonzalez and me didn't have to worry about a thing during our stay.

Getting to know the city

Die Stadt ist recht klein und überschaulich, hat aber viel Charme. Historisch gesehen ist es auch eine sehr interessante Stadt. Am bekanntesten ist Parral wohl für das Bergwerk, welches bis 1974 in Betrieb war und heute besichtigt werden kann. Der Name "El Capital del Mundo" (Hauptstadt der Welt) kommt daher, dass hier das meiste Silber in ganz Amerika abgebaut wurde. Das Bergwerk war riesig, 8 Etagen tief. Die unteren Etagen stehen heutzutage unter Wasser, aber wir sind trotzdem noch ziemlich weit in die Tiefe gefahren. Ein eher weniger vertrauenserweckender Fahrstuhl hat uns per Seilzug herab gelassen und wir haben uns ein Bild von den damaligen Arbeitsbedingungen machen können... sehr dunkel, eng und heiß!
Mit dem Reichtum aus der Erde kamen dann auch die Paläste. Der Palast der Familie Alvadaro dauerte mehrere Jahre bis zur Fertigstellung und der Prunk kann nun besichtigt werden. Die Geschichte der Familie ist ebenfalls interessant, weswegen dieses Museum den Besuch absolut wert war. Es ist auch gar nicht so lange her, dass die letzte Nachfahrin dort wohnte.
Um das Ganze noch zu toppen, ein Sahnehäubchen auf Parral zu setzen, gibt es da noch diese Süßigkeiten. Laut Alexandra handelt es sich hierbei nicht um irgend eine Nascherei, sondern um eine international beliebte und mehrmals bepreiste Köstlichkeit. Die Marke heißt Gota de Miel - und Ale hatte nicht übertrieben...

The city is quite small and you'll find your way around town in no time, but it's got something. Historically, it is a very interesting place to visit - Parral is most famous for its mine which operated until 1974. The nickname 'El Capital del Mundo' dates back to these times in which most of the silver of whole America was produced here. The mine was huge, 8 floors and several meters deep. Nowadays, it's not possible to go all the way down since some floors are flooded. Nevertheless, we went down pretty far and the 'elevator' was anything but trustworthy. Down there, the guide explained the process and progress of mining in the course of the years and we got an impression of the former working conditions... very dark, narrow and hot!
Where there's work, there's money and so the wealthy mine owner built their palace. The palace of the Alvadaro family took several years to finish and can be visited today in all its beauty. Next to the building, the family history is very interesting as well which is just another reason to take a look into the palace once in Parral. Also, it isn't such a long time ago that the last ancestor lived there.
To top it all off, there is this certain kind of candy. According to Alexandra it isn't just any type of candy, but internationally renowned. The store is called Gota de Miel and Ale didn't exaggerate.
