Beach and Pina Coladas - I am back in Summer
![]() |

After long bus rides from Parral to Chihuahua and farther to Monterrey, a plane to Cancun and another bus ride to Playa I was finally there: Paradise. At the bus station I was picked up by David, a friend of Luis at whose place I stayed - how could it be any different in Mexico if one of your friends knows someone somewhere...
It was a Sunday David's last day of vacation and hence we went out for a delicious dinner. On the next morning, I jumped straight into the next adventure. I took the Colectivo (a small van functioning as a bus) to get to the city center. That didn't really go the way I wanted it to with no city map at hand and no plan of where I actually was... I ended up taking a taxi to a place I recognized. However, you can get an easy grasp of the city center: There is a main pedestrian street with shops and restaurants and a little bit more around that area and the beach. Altogether, very neat and very touristic compared to the cities I've visited before.

| Rapell in the Jungle |

I didn't want to get bored by lying at the beach all day long and to avoid that I worked my way through all the guided tours offers on Avenida 5. Eventually I booked an adventure tour for the next day. It's hard to believe, but I did get up at 6.30am the next day to take part. We were a nice group consisting of a big family from Canada and me. A few minutes after passing Tulum we changed our mode of transport from a van to ATVs to get into the jungle. Once we arrived at the camp we prepared for two zip lines and rapell - such fun! After this we went into a cenote. Cenotes are holes underneath the earth which may vary largely in size and are a popular destination for divers. There are thousands of them on the peninsula and they are all connected. When the roots of the trees go deep into the ground, they rip the stony soil open and create these holes, the cenotes. Inside of these caves, stalagmites and stalagtites grew over the years. The fresh water in there is cristal clear.
Back at the jungle camp, lunch was prepared - after all these activities we really needed that!

The next day was a little more remote. The destination of that tour was Isla Mujeres, an island not far from Cancun. Obviously, it would have been way too boring to take a ferry there which is why we chose the catamaran as our mode of transport. Half way to the island we stopped for snorkeling at a coral reef and an underwater museum.
On the island, we rent a golf cart, explored the surroundings and had a Pina Colada in a coconut at the beach... what a perfect day! All that was topped off by a party at the hostel and playa's clubs at night.

| Tulum |

| El Paraiso Beach in Tulum again... |
Eventually, Sunday was the day for culture. I recovered from the cold in the North of Mexico and was willing to leave the beach behind for a day. Once on Yucatan, one shouldn't miss the temples of the Mayas.
Altogether, we visited 2 ruins: Tulum and Coba. Also, we were at a beach in Tulum, but it simply poured rain... even in paradise that happens sometimes. Tulum is located right at the beach and quite small and Coba is in the jungle. There is the only pyramid one can still climb up in that area. The steps up there were very steep. However, the view was well worth the effort - I felt like the King of the Jungle!
