The Long Travel
Das letzte große Reiseziel bevor es wieder nach hause geht sollte Punta del Este sein. Ich habe lange überlegt, ob ich nach der langen Reiserei von Cancun zurück nach Monterrey, weiter nach Buenos Aires tatsächlich noch weiter nach Uruguay will... der Strand sollte es wert sein.
Somit hatte ich noch einen letzten Abend mit Luis in Monterrey und hab mich dann am Mittwoch auf den langen Weg gemacht. Ich kam 4 Uhr morgens am Freitag in Punta del Este an und hab erstmal viel Schlaf nachgeholt.

The last highlight on my trip shall be Punta del Este. For a long time, I wasn't sure whether I really want to travel much longer after leaving Holbox Tuesday morning to get to Cancun, flying off to Monterrey to catch my flight to Buenos Aires on Wednesday... the beach in Punta del Este is supposed to be worth it.
Hence, I had my last dinner with Luis in Mexico on Tuesday and started my long trip to Uruguay the next day. At 4am on Friday morning I reached my final destination and just slept for a long time.

Für die meisten Menschen in Südamerika scheint Punta del Este das Miami unter den Strandorten zu sein. Ich hab so viel Positives gehört, dass ich mittlerweile sehr aufgeregt war, mir ein eigenes Bild zu verschaffen.
Die Ernüchterung kam jedoch schnell bei Tageslicht: Hochhäuser im 80er-Jahre-Baustil, wenig Farbe, kein türkisblaues Meer und eher durchschnittliche Strände - und all das bei hohen Preisen. Zumindest dort passts für die Schönen und Reichen. Ich denke ich bin einfach zu verwöhnt von Mexiko. Das alles hält mich natürlich nicht davon ab trotzdem das Beste draus zu machen. Außerdem ist ist sowas auch immer Ansichtssache und für die Menschen aus Argentinien, Brasilien und Uruguay ist das hier der Traum.

For most of the people in South America Punta del Este seems to be the Miami Beach among all beach destinations. I heard so many good things about it already that I almost couldn't wait to see it with my own eyes. However, I got back to reality in Uruguay by daylight: skyscrapers in 80s style, few colors, no turquoise colored water and rather mediocre beaches. I guess I am too spoiled from Mexico. Nevertheless, this won't keep me from making the most out of it. In the end, it is all a question of preferences and for the people from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay this is it.

Zusammen mit Emily, einer in Sydney lebenden Schottin, hab ich Punta del Este für mich entdeckt.
Am ersten Tag sind wir an einem ruhigen Strand nahe Hafen gelandet, wo wohl hauptsächlich nur Einheimische hingehen. Dort haben wir so lange verharrt bis wir merkten, dass die Sonne hier doch sehr intensiv ist und vor allem vor 20 Uhr nicht untergeht... abends sind wir dann in die Bar des TRIP Hostels und wie überall im Süden geht's hier erst sehr spät los mit der Party. Um 3 Uhr haben wir uns auf den Weg in den Club gemacht. Fazit: Mit der Berliner Clubszene kann kaum ein Ort mithalten.
Die nächsten Tage haben wir dann versucht, so viele verschiedene Ecken wie nur möglich zu erkunden. Dort verstand ich dann zum ersten Mal, wo die Reichen und Schönen hier hausen. Wir haben einige Villen und Luxusapartments vom Wasser aus gesehen.
Wir haben einen Spaziergang am Hafen entlang und um die Halbinsel herum gemacht, waren am Bikini Beach und in La Barra. Der Bikini Beach und auch der dazugehörige Ortsteil Manantiales bieten Einiges für einen perfekten Tag am Strand und La Barra erfüllt dann am Abend die Wünsche des Feinschmeckers. Mit "abends" meine ich ab 22 Uhr und aufwärts, wenn man ein bisschen Trubel haben möchte. Hier ist es das normalste der Welt, dass ganze Familien gegen 23 Uhr erst in den Restaurants eintrudeln. Mein Favorit in La Barra ist das Restaurant FLO, hier gibt's grandiose Salate und Pizzen und sündhaft gute Desserts... als Alternative zum Weißwein kann ich Clerer empfehlen, ähnlich wie Sangria, nur in Weiß und sehr erfrischend mit vielen Früchten.
Neben dem Bikini Beach soll der OVO Beach, zum Conrad Hotel gehörend, wunderbar sein. Den hatten wir uns für Montag vorgenommen, fanden es dort aber so unglaublich teuer, dass wir das Geld lieber für Pool und Spa im Hotel selbst ausgegeben haben.
An meinem letzten Tag in Punta konnte ich sagen, dass ich die wichtigsten Ecken gesehen hab und mit gutem Gewissen dahin zurück gehen konnte, wo es mir am besten gefiel. Mit Maren und Stefan, einer Deutschen und einem Schweizer, hatte ich dann den perfekten Abschlusstag am Bikini Beach und in La Barra mit viel Spaß, reichlich Clerer und eindeutig zu viel Dulce de Leche...

Together with Emily, a Scottish girl living in Sydney, I explored the rest of Punta del Este.
We spent the first day at a beach close to the harbor where mostly only local people go. We stayed there until we realized that we got quite crispy, the sun is really intense and doesn't set before 8pm... On the evening, we went to the bar of the TRIP hostel. Like everywhere in the South, the party starts very late here and we didn't leave for the club until 3 am. My conclusion of the night: There are hardly any places that can keep up with Berlin's club scene.
The next few days we tried to see as many different spots here as possible. For the first time I realized that there are some mansions and luxury apartments around here. We saw some when walking along the coast, in La Barra and by the Bikini Beach. The Bikini Beach and the area Manantiales are perfect for a day at the beach and La Barra is the place to hit in the evenings for food and drinks. When talking about 'evenings' I mean anytime from 10pm onwards if you don't want to be the only person in the restaurant. It's very common to see whole familys with their kids arriving at a restaurant just around 11pm. My most favorite place in La Barra is the restaurant FLO. They have amazing salads, delicious pizzas and heavenly desserts... and a recommendable alternative to a plain white wine is Clerer - similar to Sangria, but with white wine and fruits and very refreshing.
Next to the Bikini Beach the OVO Beach which belongs to the Conrad Hotel is supposed to be worth a visit. This one was on our list for Monday. Eventually, it was so ridiculously expensive there that we decided to rather spend the money on the pool and Spa in the hotel as such. On my last day in Punta del Este, I could certainly say that I've seen a lot and easily go back to the places I loved the most without any feelings of regret. Together with Maren and Stefan, German and Swiss, I had a wonderful last day at Bikini Beach and in La Barra with loads of fun, Clerer and more than enough dulce de leche...
