Roadtrip to the Mountains

Chihuahua ist ein Staat mit großer Vielfalt in der Landschaft und wir haben uns die Sierra Madre vorgenommen: Auf in die Berge. Wir fanden die Idee super, aber konnten irgendwie keinen von Luis Freunden wirklich überzeugen mitzukommen. Nach mehrmaligem Hin und Her haben wir jedoch die Frau seines Bruders für den Ausflug gewonnen, die auch noch ihren Cousin mitgenommen hat. Perfekt, zu viert ging es am Montag gegen 11 Uhr auf in die Wildnis!

There is a big variety of landscapes in the state of Chihuahua and we decided to explore the sierra madre: Off to the mountains! To us it sounded like a great idea for a trip, but most of Luis' friends weren't really convinced. Nevertheless, we had Luis' brother's wife with us after a short talk about the trip and some good arguments. She brought a cousin as well who made the group complete. Monday morning at 11am the four of us left Chihuahua behind to connect with nature...

The City in the Mountains - Creel

Nach 3 Stunden Fahrt sind wir in einer kleinen Stadt mitten in den Bergen angekommen. Hier haben wir uns erstmal auf die Suche nach einer Unterkunft begeben und sind ziemlich schnell fündig geworden: ein großes Zimmer in einem Holzhäuschen, wie man sich das eben so vorstellt in den Bergen.
Es gibt eigentlich nur eine große Straße hier, viele kleine Läden mit Handarbeiten der Menoniten und noch mehr Kinder und viel mehr Hunde - überall.

After a 3 hrs ride we arrived in a small city in the middle of the mountains. The first thing to do was finding a place to stay. Our search didn't take long: We found a big room for the four of us in a cabin, just like you would imagine it in the mountains.
There is only one main street in the city with small shops selling souvenirs made by the menonites, many children and even more dogs - everywhere.

Lake and Valley of the Monks

Der erste Programmpunkt war der See. Hier haben wir uns nach der langen Autofahrt die Beine vertreten und verklettert. Es war ein wunderschönes Gefühl einfach mitten in der Natur zu sein.
Danach haben wir uns auf den etwas längeren Weg durch Stock und Stein zum Tal der Mönche gemacht. Das sind praktisch Felsenformationen, die aussehen wie Mönche. Der lange Weg dorthin hat sich jedoch absolut gelohnt. Wir waren kurz vor Sonnenuntergang dort und konnten nach einer weiteren Klettereinheit die fantastische Aussicht genießen.

The first point on the agenda was the lake. Here we finally got moving a little bit after the long road trip. We took a walk and climbed some hills. We just soaked up the fresh air and pure nature. After this, we took off to the valley of the monks - basically these are stone formations that look like monks. It was a rather long ride through nature and another rock climbing exercise, but well worth it. We arrived shortly before sunset and had a beautiful view.

Waterfalls & Copper Canyons

Am nächsten Morgen wurden wir von der Sonne geweckt und waren bereit für ein weiteres Abenteuer. Wir haben eine Tour zu einem kleinen Wasserfall gemacht, mit Squads. Es gab wieder eine atemberaubende Aussicht, auch wenn ich zugeben muss, dass dieser Wasserfall nach den Iguazú Falls eher klein wirkte.
Auf dem Rückweg bin ich dann gefahren und hab erstmal etwas gebraucht, um Kontrolle über das Gerät zu bekommen. Ich glaube Luis bangte etwas um sein Leben auf dem Rücksitz, aber nach ein paar Ratschlägen vom Experten lief es wie am Schnürchen.

Nachmittags ging es dann mit dem Auto weiter nach oben. Bei dem Aussichtspunkt angekommen, war es mal wieder Zeit zum Essen - natürlich etwas, das ich noch nicht kannte und natürlich etwas mit Fleisch. Die Tortillataschen heißen Gorditas (wörtlich übersetzt "die Dicken") und gibt es aus verschiedenen Maissorten: Gelb, Rot, Blau. Man konnte diese dann mit unterschiedlichen Füllungen bestellen. Es war ein Genuss und es stellte sich heraus, dass wir diese Stärkung für den langen Spaziergang entlang der Berge zum Aussichtspunkt auch brauchten.

On the next morning we were woken up by the sun and ready for another adventure. We made a tour to a small waterfall, on motocycles with 4 wheels. There was another amazing view. Nevertheless, I have to admit that the waterfall almost appeared small after having seen the Iguazú Falls...
On the way back I drove and struggled a little bit to gain control over the vehicle - I guess Luis was scared of his life. However, after a short time and a little advice from the expert I made it. It was a lot of fun!

In the afternoon, we drove up the mountains a little further - this time with the car. Once we arrived at the viewing point it was time for food again - of course it was something I didn't know yet and, naturally, it contained meat. The little tortilla sandwiches are called Gorditas (literally translated 'the chubby ones') and they are made out of different kinds of corn: yellow, red, blue. They come with all kinds of different fillings - so delicious! In the end, we really needed this energy boost to make the long walk all the way up to the viewing point.
