"Homecoming" - Time to Relax

Nach einem langen Flug und ein paar mehr Stempeln in meinem Reisepass war ich auch schon in Monterrey, der drittgrößten Stadt Mexikos. Berlin ist fast klein im Gegensatz zu dieser Stadt und ohne Auto läuft hier gar nichts... wie schön, dass ich nicht allein bin und einen alten Freund hier hab! Zu wissen, dass ich in einer Stadt ankomme und jemand am Flughafen wartet um mich abzuholen, fühlte sich fast an wie nach hause zu kommen. Insgesamt erinnert mich hier alles viel mehr an zu hause. Ich hab gemerkt, dass der Süden Amerikas erstmal hinter mir liegt und die Staaten nur ein paar Autostunden entfernt sind. Besonders in San Pedro, dem eher schnieken Stadtteil Monterreys, sieht man viele Prachtbauten und gepflegte Gärten. Mittendrin wohnt Luis. Was für ein wunderbares Gefühl, endlich mal wieder ein eigenes Bett und Bad zu haben!

After several hours spent on a plane and a few more stamps in my passport I arrived in Monterrey, the third biggest city in Mexico. Berlin appears to be quite small in comparison to this city and nothing works without a car... the better it is that I am not alone here and I am visiting an old friend of mine. It almost felt like coming home knowing that there is somebody waiting at the airport to pick me up. In general, I noticed that I've left the south of America behind and the USA are only a few hours by car away. Especially San Pedro, the rather fancy neighbourhood with big and beautiful houses and English gardens, reminded me a lot of the States. That's the neighbourhood where Luis lives. What an amazing feeling to have an own bed an bathroom again!

Alle Reisenden, die ich bisher getroffen hab, schwärmten von dem mexikanischen Essen. Dem kann ich nur anschließen: Tortillas wohin man schaut, viel frisches Gemüse, viel Mais, ein ordentliches Frühstück und Fleisch - ohne Ende. Damit meine ich tatsächlich zu jeder Mahlzeit. Als Vegetarier hat man hier keine Chance, es sei denn man möchte sich ausschließlich von Quesadillas ernähren. Chili brauch ich glaub ich auch nicht extra erwähnen, das ist Standard. Soweit so gut, wenn mein Magen das nur auch so sehen würde... denn auch hier haben alle Recht behalten : ohne Magenpille ohne Mexiko.

These who have travelled to Mexico are crazy about the food. And I can fully understand this passion: tortillas whereever you are, fresh veggies, especially corn, a good breakfast and meat - everywhere. I really mean it like that, there is meat in every meal. Vegetarians could probably not survive unless they want to eat quesadillas day in and day out. I don't think it's necessary to mention that chili is a main ingredient of the Mexican cuisine.
So far so good if only my stomach would agree to that... here, again, everybody was dead right: no stomach pills no Mexico.

Best Day

Am Sonntag sollte es auf in die Berge gehen. Im Norden Mexikos ist es Tradition zu grillen am Ende der Woche. Ausgerüstet mit einem Jeep, ein paar Freunden und gefühlten 5kg Fleisch machten wir uns auf den Weg nach Huasteca. Das Wetter war wirklich traumhaft und die Fahrt durch Flüsse und Wüste zwischen den Bergen sehr abenteuerlich. Irgendwann hielten wir mitten im Nirgendwo an und die Vorbereitungen fürs Barbecue begonnen. Die Kulisse war atemberaubend.

On Sunday, it was time to leave the city behind and head for the mountains. In the North of Mexico it is a tradition to barbecue at the end of the week. Equipped with a jeep, a couple of friends and about 5kg of meat we hit the road to huasteca. The weather was great and the ride through rivers and desert along the mountains was adventurous. Eventually we came to a halt in the middle of nowhere and barbecued. The ambience was simply breathtaking.
